Lyn worked as a secretary to solicitors and probation officers in her early working life and after her first child was born, she became a bank manager’s secretary. Prior to being diagnosed with hypothyroidism, she trained to become an English teacher, teaching English to both adults and child students from all over the world and English grammar to UK adult students and their children in local schools. Lyn first became ill when she was 29 when her first child was three. She saw different specialists for her separate symptoms, all to no avail. Lyn’s file was so thick, even she was beginning to believe she was a hypochondriac! She carried on as usual and one morning (Thank God) a lump appeared in my throat and then, after reading an article in Woman Magazine regarding the thyroid blood test results, was convinced that she had an underactive thyroid. Surgery followed, and very slowly, Lyn started to feel better, although never 100%. As she improved, Lyn wanted to help others who were in the same position as she was in, so started campaigning. Lyn never imagined then that her campaigning would involve setting up a charity that would grow to such proportions, but she is so glad she did it.

Liz Smart is a wonderful volunteer with the Pernicious Anaemia Society. A former midwife who also lectured, Liz is now PAS Chair of Trustees and does a sterling job supporting the Management Committee.
As well as being Chair of Trustees, Liz also volunteers as a helpline volunteer, helping our members with their questions and concerns.
