About Professor Richards:
Professor Toby Richards is a practising surgeon and honorary professor of surgery at University College London, as well as an honorary professor of anaesthesia at Monash University. He has led numerous clinical trials exploring the problem of anaemia in patients before major surgery and the effects of intravenous iron. His extensive research includes trials like PREVENTT, ITACS, and POSTvenTT, focusing on anaemia in both pre- and post-operative settings, as well as the impact of iron on mental and physical health.
He is also actively involved in Patient Blood Management, having collaborated with the Department of Health in Western Australia and the UK NHS Blood and Transplant on implementation strategies. Professor Richards has contributed to Cochrane guidelines and consensus documents on iron therapy and has been a speaker at numerous international conferences. He also serves as a board member for NATA (the international association for Patient Blood Management) and ACTA (Australian Clinical Trials Alliance).
At this event, Professor Richards will be discussing the importance of iron in the body, how it works, and how deficiencies—common in patients with Pernicious Anaemia or low B12—can be addressed through supplements and infusions.
Whether you’re a member or not, everyone is welcome to join! A small fee will help fund research, education, and raise awareness about Pernicious Anaemia and B12 malabsorption.
