NICE asked to Review the Diagnosis and Treatment of PA
Following a meeting between the Chairman of the society, Martyn Hooper, and the Medical Director of the NHS in Wales, Dr. Stephen Hunter, the National Institute for Clinical Excellence will be asked to conduct a full and thorough review into the diagnosis and treatment of Pernicious Anaemia in particular and Vitamin B12 Deficiency in general.
"The doctor asked for a meeting and I expected I would have to set out my case very carefully", says Martyn.  "It turned out that Dr. Hunter had done his homework and had followed my blog and spent hours trawling through the online forum - especially the My Story section"
Dr. Hunter was attached to the Welsh Assembly Government but has now returned to his position as Medical Director of the Aneurin Bevan Health Board.
This request for a review is another major milestone in the history of the society and means that the problems faced by our members are being discussed and taken seriously at the highest levels in health care provision.  Hopefully it will signal the end of the current practice of dismissing the symptoms experienced by patients as being imaginary and prescribing anti-depressants.
Downloadable copies of the letter received from Dr. Hunter will be made available soon.
